Tiered Storage Data Sheet

Tiered Storage Data Sheet

Download this Data Sheet

With every new cloud service a business consumes, the total amount of content that needs to be stored and accessed grows substantially. However, most cloud consumers care more about how fast the storage content may be accessed and consumed rather than where or on which type of disk it’s stored. This often leads to increases in the cost of the cloud storage and the efficiency of the cloud based services. Storage collectivism in cloud doesn’t work, as you can’t treat all cloud content in the same way. A tiered storage approach for cloud services is essential in order to strike a cost-performance balance.

A tiered storage strategy, properly planned and executed, can increase service levels for critical applications, while reducing the overall cost of data storage.

Dimension Data CaaS Tiered Storage

The Compute-as-a-Service (CaaS) offering from Dimension Data is an enterprise-class CaaS service available across the globe through Dimension Data’s Managed Cloud Platform (MCP). It is accessible via the Internet from anywhere in the world, at any time. The MCP platform is built using industry-leading hardware and software and is fully automated and orchestrated via purpose-built software. It comprises servers, tiered storage, network and WAN optimisation elements coupled with virtualisation technology and operating system software.

Dimension Data CaaS tiered storage assigns different categories of data to different types of storage, in order provide balance between price and performance within the Public, Private or the Hosted Private CaaS. Data categories for tiered storage can be based on the levels of data protection needed, performance requirements and frequency of use. Since assigning data to a particular tiered disk may be an ongoing and complex activity, Dimension Data provides software to automatically manage the process, based on a client’s needs. Clients can simply change their storage requirements using the cloud application programmable interface (API) or the administrative UI, on the fly.

There are three different types of tiered storage solutions available for CaaS within Dimension Data’s MCP – High Performance, Standard and Economy. Clients can select the appropriate storage tiers for their applications based on the level of performance-required, offset against the cost of that storage.

Backed by Industry Leading Technology

The Dimension Data Tiered storage solution exclusively utilises the EMC VNX Series hardware delivering high-performing unified storage with unsurpassed simplicity and efficiency, optimised for virtual applications running on VMware.

All tiers of cloud disks are deployed on LUNs powered by a hybrid disk configuration consisting of Nearline SAS disks in a RAID5 configuration. In addition both Standard and High Performance tiers are fronted by an extensive ‘Fast Cache’ solid-state disk infrastructure ensuring the highest levels of transactional performance with increased bandwidth and low latency.
